The Present Simple tense describes actions that happen regularly, facts, or general truths. It is a core tense for A2 English learners to talk about daily life. We use it for routines, like I wake up at 7 AM every day, and for habits, such as She drinks coffee in the morning. It also expresses things that are always true, for example, The sun rises in the east. For most verbs, we use the base form, as in I work أو You play football. However, for he, she, ، و it, ، نضيف -s أو -es to the verb. For instance, He works at a bank أو She watches TV in the evenings. This tense is essential for expressing basic information about your life and the world around you clearly.

How Do We Form the Present Simple?

Forming the Present Simple is easy! The main verb changes only for he, she, ، و it.

Affirmative Sentences

  • بالنسبة لـ I, you, we, they: Use the base form of the verb. I eat breakfast.
  • بالنسبة لـ he, she, it: Add -s أو -es to the base form. She eats breakfast.

Negative Sentences

نحن نستخدم do not (don't) أو does not (doesn't) before the base form of the verb.

  • بالنسبة لـ I, you, we, they: do not + base verb. They don't like coffee.
  • بالنسبة لـ he, she, it: does not + base verb. He doesn't play tennis.

Questions

نحن نستخدم Do أو Does at the beginning of the question, before the subject, and then the base form of the verb.

  • بالنسبة لـ I, you, we, they: Do + subject + base verb? Do you live here?
  • بالنسبة لـ he, she, it: Does + subject + base verb? Does she speak Spanish?

When Do We Add -es to Verbs?

بالنسبة لـ he, she, ، و it, we usually add -s. But sometimes we add -es.

  • If the verb ends in -ch, -sh, -s, -x, ، أو -z, add -es. Examples: watchwatches, washwashes, kisskisses, fixfixes.
  • If the verb ends in -o, add -es. Example: gogoes, dodoes.
  • If the verb ends in a consonant + -y, change -y to -ies. Example: studystudies, flyflies.
  • If the verb ends in a vowel + -y, just add -s. Example: playplays.

Using Adverbs of Frequency

We often use adverbs of frequency with the Present Simple to say how often something happens.

  • Common adverbs: always, usually, often, sometimes, hardly ever, never.
  • Place them before the main verb: I always drink tea in the morning.
  • Place them after the verb to be: She is always happy.

الأخطاء الشائعة لدى المتحدثين باللغة الإسبانية

A common mistake for Spanish speakers is forgetting the -s for he, she, ، و it. In Spanish, verb endings change for all persons, but in English, only the third person singular has a special ending in the Present Simple.

  • خطأ: He work at a bank.
  • الصحيح: He works at a bank.

Another error is using do أو does with the main verb in affirmative sentences, or not using them correctly in negatives and questions.

  • خطأ: I do like coffee. (Unless for emphasis)
  • الصحيح: I like coffee.
  • خطأ: She no like tea.
  • الصحيح: She doesn't like tea.
