You use some in affirmative sentences and for offers or requests. You use any in negative sentences and most questions. These words are called quantifiers. They tell us about the amount or number of something. We use them with both countable nouns (things you can count, like apples) and uncountable nouns (things you cannot count, like water). For example, you say I have some friends (affirmative) or I don’t have any money (negative). You also ask Do you have any questions? (question). However, for offers or requests, you use some, like Would you like some coffee? Can I have some water? Mastering these simple rules helps you communicate clearly about quantities in English, a vital skill for A2 learners and for exams like the A2 Key.

What are ‘Some’ and ‘Any’?

Someany are quantifiers. They tell us about an unknown or unspecified amount or number of something.

We use them with both countable nouns (things we can count, like books) and uncountable nouns (things we cannot count, like sugar).
